Erected in 1861 and encased in fiberglass for the 100th anniversary of the American Civil War, the flagpole made of long leaf pine stands as a tribute to the Early County Confederate veterans who marched off to war as ordered by the State of Georgia. A Tribute was made at the 50-year anniversary in 1911 by local Confederate veteran and Physician Yelvington Thaxton Urquhart, who enlisted as a private and gained his medical training during the war in Virginia as an assistant surgeon. The Confederate flagpole is a symbol of Georgia history and many visitors come to Blakely to visit the site on the courthouse square.
